KHS opens wrestling slate with 2 victories

Seven Kingsford wrestlers went 2-0 as the Flivvers defeated Gwinn 58-18 and North Central 48-29 in season-opening matches at home Thursday.

Brayden Weber (126), Jacob Patrick (150), Tyler Bray (165), Orrin Smith (175), Jake Sundquist (190), Jake Lockhart (215) and Connor White (285) were the undefeated Flivvers.

Kingsford was missing two returning state-placers from last year due to injuries — junior Max Sundquist (175), third in the state last year, and sophomore Ginger Majurin (135), eighth in girls.

“Our team came out with some fire and intensity,” said Kingsford coach Darren Groleau. “Our veterans did what was expected of them and got those bonus points. Zahir Topping, Brayden Weber and Kaleb Warner all came up big for us in various ways.”

Topping prevailed with a pin against North Central, while Webers’ wins both came on pins.

“Kaleb had a nice pin in his first match and we knew he had a tough second match. We just wanted him to fight and not get pinned. He did a great job at that and it was a win in our book,” Groleau said.

“Jake Sundquist, our lone senior had two big pins for us and it was nice to see Jake start the year off like that,” he added.

One of the more anticipated matches saw Lockhart defeat returning state qualifier and state-ranked Myles Nehring of North Central.

“We wanted that matchup to see where Jake is and he wanted the challenge for himself as well,” Groleau said. “He ended that match by getting a big pin and a big boost in confidence.”

Kingsford is at St. Ignace for a tournament this weekend and wrestles at Iron Mountain on Tuesday night.

Starting at $3.50/week.
