Kingsford swim team adds more UP qualifiers

RUDYARD – Kingsford added five more U.P. qualifiers and overpowered Rudyard in a varsity swim meet Thursday afternoon.

Kingsford’s girls won 157-66, while the boys took an 87-19 victory – with Rudyard only having three boys on its roster.

“The pool was really warm so it hampered some of their times, but overall there was some improvement,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said.

Sophomores Allison Deuter, Gianna Novara and Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson produced double wins for the Flivvers. Deuter won the 50 freestyle (26.99) and 100 butterfly (1:11.19), while Novara was first in the 100 free (1:09.84) and 100 backstroke (1:18.49) in a personal best. Johnson took the boys 100 fly (1:04.01) and 100 backstroke (1:04.10).

“Other than our double winners, the rest of the events were split up showing the depth that we are developing,” Lindstrom said. “Our first-year swimmers did really well, and our veteran swimmers are a big part of helping bring them along.”

The girls won every event, while the boys won everything but the 50 and 100 free which went to Quinn Darr of Rudyard.

“Darr is a really good freestyler,” Lindstrom said. “(Coach) Steve Davis and Rudyard have a very young team. They have the most kids out for swimming that they have had for a long time, so it is great to see their numbers growing.”

New U.P. qualifying swims for the Flivvers included sophomore Aubree Peterson in the 100 fly and 100 free; senior David Arcand in the 100 fly; Novara in the backstroke (1:18.49), senior Sam Lamirand in the backstroke, and junior Thomas Gibbons in the 100 fly.

Other individual first-place swims for the Flivvers came from Peterson in the 200 free (2:25.36); junior Kailey Matuszewski in the 200 IM (2:41.39); senior Quinten Smith in the 50 free (25.31); Lamirand in the 100 free (58.57); senior Marley Dixon in the 500 free (7:07.20); junior Ella McLean in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.89); and Gibbons in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.80).

“Elise Camron (sophomore) and Nevaeh Fortier (freshman) both swam the 100 free for the first time and did extremely well,” Lindstrom added. “Cooper Meyers (freshman) and Lyam Schooler (senior) are really coming on strong improving every meet.”

Up next for Kingsford is a meet at Manistique on Tuesday.
