KINGSFORD – Two of the top girls basketball teams in the Upper Peninsula met Tuesday night in Kingsford when the Division 1-3 fourth-ranked Flivvers played host to the Division 4 No. 4 Norway Knights.

Additionally, it was a showcase of two players who appear destined for All-U.P. honors if not Dream Team selections after the season.

In the end, it was Kingsford and sophomore Aubrie Moore who came out on top of Norway and senior Lauren Adams by a count of 51-44.

Moore finished with 31 points — which included 9 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter — as the Flivvers (9-2) got past the Knights (10-2).

Adams wound up with 28 points for 64% of her team’s output. Moore produced 61% of Kingsford’s.

Kingsford's Aubrie Moore (12) hits a 3- pointer in the first half Tuesday at Kingsford.

“Good game between us and Norway,” KHS coach Mike Cross said. “Both teams having good years, each with an exceptional player.”

Kingsford jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter on the strength of five points from Moore, three from Alyvia Kowalski and two each from Avery Edwards and Madalyn Sleik.

The Flivvers increased their advantage to 24-15 at halftime. Adams had totaled 13 of her team’s points at that point.

“We knew we’d have our hands full defending Lauren Adams,” Cross said. “She is such a smooth player. Explosive. She had 28 points and yet I still thought Alyvia Kowalski and Avery Edwards did a great job defending her.”

The Knights started to fight back in the third quarter, outscoring the Flivvers 13-12 to make the score 36-28 entering the fourth.

But Moore kept her team in front from there, scoring 13 points down the stretch to preserve her team’s win.

“Aubrie had a great night for us,” Cross said. “She handled the pressure well. She also shot the ball well.”

Moore got help from Kowalski, who has become a consistent complementary scorer for the Flivvers.

“Alyvia Kowalski again did a great job for us hitting shots and attacking the rim,” Cross said of the junior who finished with nine points. “She’s a tough matchup for teams.”

On the other side, Jessa Rossler contributed seven points and Addison Burklund chipped in with six for the Knights.

Both teams shot well from the foul stripe. Norway connected on all 10 of its free throws and Kingsford sank 15 of 19.

The Knights are scheduled to face North Central (4-6) in a Skyline Central Conference contest on Friday, while the Flivvers are slated to host Forest Park (9-4) also on Friday.
