Knights fend off improved Nordics
FELCH TOWNSHIP – In the first game of the 2025-26 season for both teams, the Norway Knights overwhelmed the North Dickinson Nordics by 34 points.
In the rematch on Friday, the margin was much narrower as the Nordics battled the UPSSA Division 4 fourth-ranked Knights to the wire before Norway posted a 42-36 Skyline Central Conference victory at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium.
“Great game tonight,” ND coach Kirk Mattson said afterward. “I thought our defensive intensity was very good and we were playing loose and actually looked like we were having fun out there.
“I couldn’t be happier with our effort, especially this being our third game this week.”
Aspen Anderson kickstarted the Nordics (4-5) in the first quarter with six points as ND grabbed an 8-6 lead heading into the second.
Norway, which was also playing in its third game of the week, came back in the second and held a 20-18 edge at halftime.
The Knights (7-1) inched to a 28-24 lead after three and then outscored the Nordics 14-12 in the fourth.
Norway standout Lauren Adams tallied eight of her game-high 16 points in the fourth to help stave off North Dickinson.
“Norway is a very good team that has very good shooters coupled of course with having to deal with Lauren Adams,” Mattson said.
Paytan Carlson is one of the shooters Mattson was referring to and the senior finished with 14 points, which included two 3-pointers.
Alyson Steinbrecher sank two triples and paced the Nordics with 11 points. Anderson finished with eight and Ava Oman had six.
“We have a few things to work on offensively, but I am confident that we will get there,” Mattson said.
