Nordics stifle Knights in hoops showdown

NORWAY – The North Dickinson Nordics entered Monday night’s contest at Norway with a five-game winning streak. The Knights came into the game riding an eight-game winning streak.

Additionally, the two squads were tied in the Upper Peninsula Sports Writers and Sportscasters Division 4 poll at No. 4.

With all that, the stage was set for a barnburner, but that never materialized. The Nordics (8-1) took control early, locked down the Knights (8-3) throughout and left with a 45-32 Skyline Central Conference triumph.

North Dickinson surrendered just five points in each of the first two quarters and seven in the third and established a 33-17 advantage after three.

Norway got untracked in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Nordics 15-12 but by then ND had a stranglehold on the game.

ND junior Trenton Kramer led all scorers with 19 points and added eight rebounds and two steals. Brady Jungwirth contributed heavily with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Spencer Kramer finished with six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals and Ty King posted five points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

Norway senior Owen Baij buried four 3-pointers to pace the Knights with 12 points, while Kaleb Lapine chipped in with 10 points.

North Dickinson held Norway’s top scorer Anthony Pineda to just seven points.

The Knights aim to shake off the loss Friday when they host Stephenson (7-2). The Nordics, whose lone defeat of the year came at the hands of the Eagles, are scheduled to host Munising (4-5) on Thursday.
