ISHPEMING – Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson and Kingsford sophomore Allison Deuter led the way for the Flivvers in a swimming sweep over Westwood Tuesday afternoon at Westwood High School.

The girls team won 119-42, with the boys notching an 81-33 decision — with Johnson and Deuter each snagging two individual wins.

“This wasn’t one of our better meets, as we were a little bit off,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “We have to get back to the swing of practice after the holiday break. We also were having the kids do some different events to get more qualifications for UPs.”

The Flivvers did add three new U.P. Finals qualifying swims with sophomore Aubree Peterson, who went second in the 200 IM (2:45.51); junior Ella McLean with a second in the 50 free (29.62) and Deuter with a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:19.92.

Deuter’s other win came in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.86. She is currently second in the U.P. among all girls swimmers with 422.60 performance points on the season. She trails Marquette junior Kaytlin Roell who has 448.70. The duo finished first and second last season, with Deuter edging ahead of Roell by season’s end 508.10 to 498.35.

Johnson took wins for the boys in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 1:02.05 and the 100 backstroke (1:03.15). Johnson and junior Thomas Gibbons are also among the U.P. points leaders. Gibbons, Tuesday’s 100 breaststroke winner (1:11.81), sits third with 363.25, while Johnson is fourth at 354.15.

Also among the top 10 in total performance points in the U.P. is senior Sam Lamirand who is eighth with 338.90. He took the 200 free Tuesday with a time of 2:20.26.

Other individual event winners for Kingsford against Westwood included sophomore Gianna Novara leading a 1-2-3 Flivver finish in the 200 freestyle. Novara posted a 2:40.10 with junior Jocelyn Lindbeck in second (2:46.38) and senior Chloe Blazer (2:57.10) in third.

Senior Kailey Matuszewski won the 50 free (29.02), McLean was quickest in the 100 free (1:09.50), and Peterson took the 500 free (6:40.86).

The Flivvers head to Houghton Saturday. The next home meet on the schedule is Tuesday, Jan. 20, against Westwood.
