Wykons stymied in girls BB loss to Miners
NEGAUNEE – The West Iron County girls basketball team never got its offense untracked as the Negaunee Miners held the Wykons to only six field goals in their 55-18 triumph Tuesday at Lakeview Gymnasium.
The Wykons, who hadn’t played since Dec. 17, stayed within 12-5 after the first quarter before going stone cold and committing numerous ball-handling miscues in the middle quarters leading to a 26-7 deficit at halftime and a 42-11 hole after three quarters.
“Negaunee (8-0) is one of the best teams in the U.P. and they were much more aggressive than our girls,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “We need to play with more confidence and limit our mistakes. Twenty-five turnovers (are) tough to overcome.”
While West Iron (2-2) was struggling, Negaunee’s Keira Waterman broke out with 11 points in the middle quarters and finished with a game-high 19.
Bristol Shamion led the Wykons with five points, while Kyla Erickson finished with four.
West Iron did not make a 3-point shot in the game against Negaunee’s impressive defense, which has held opponents to 29.3 points per game so far this season.
West Iron gets back into action tonight with a road game at Forest Park (3-3)
