Knights take two from Cougars

Landon DeBakker pitched five scoreless innings as Norway swept a doubleheader Wednesday against Superior Central, 12-2 and 3-0 at Mike Maule Field.

“Our pitching was good in both games,” said Norway coach Tony Adams. “Carter Cazzola and Landon DeBakker stepped up on the mound and Trenton Halvas competed behind the plate.”

The opener was a four-inning game, with Owen Baij pitching a scoreless first. DeBakker followed with two shutout innings and Cazzola worked the fourth. They allowed four hits, walked three and struck out eight.

The Knights hammered 11 hits and four players had two-hit games — DeBakker, Halvas, Hunter Langin and Kellan Amundson. Halvas, Langin, and Baij all ripped doubles.

“Game two was a grinder and I’m proud of the way we executed on defense and offense,” Adams said.

DeBakker pitched three perfect innings in the nightcap, fanning five Cougars. Cazzola finished the six-inning shutout, scattering three hits and also getting five whiffs.

DeBakker led the offense with a double and single. Cazzola added two singles and Baij tripled.

“We definitely need some practice time, which is coming over the next week,” Adams said.

The Knights (6-3) will travel to downstate Maple City on Saturday. They’re back at Marion Park on Thursday, hosting Gladstone.

Starting at $3.50/week.
