KINGSFORD — Negaunee pitchers checked Kingsford to six total hits in a doubleheader sweep at Lodal Park Wednesday afternoon. The Miners won 4-0 and 12-2, the first game marking the first time this season that the Flivvers were held scoreless.

Sophomore Jolie Fleming stayed hot at the plate for the Flivvers, with three hits on the day, including a pair of triples with an RBI in the second game. Fleming leads the Flivvers’ offense through the early going with a .417 average after Wednesday’s action. Five of her ten hits have been for extra bases, and she is the team leader with seven RBIs.

The Miners collected seven hits off junior pitcher Mya Brunswick in the first game, but didn’t crack the scoreboard until the sixth inning. The game headed into the final inning 1-0 before the Miners tacked on more runs. Brunswick fanned five and only walked one. Negaunee sophomore righty Alyse Robar punched out 12 Flivvers for the win in the circle.

Kingsford grabbed a 1-0 first-inning lead in the second game thanks to Fleming’s triple, a line drive to the power alley in right center. It was just a 4-2 game after three when Fleming scooted home on a wild pitch, but Negaunee exploded for seven runs in the fourth – fueled in part by some defensive breakdowns and mental errors on the part of the Flivvers’ defense.

Both Kingsford errors in the game occurred in the dreadful fourth inning, which saw Negaunee send 11 batters to the plate. Senior Cassie Fays, an all-conference second team selection last season, cleared the fence in left field for a solo homer in the frame. It was one of seven extra base hits for the Miners, who totaled 11 hits in the five-inning game.

Kingsford's Kyra Clement (25) fields a ground ball at third base on Wednesday at Lodal Park.

Senior Karly Trevillian shouldered the loss, charged with six earned runs. She whiffed two and walked four.

The losses dropped the Flivvers just below .500 at 4-5 for the season.

Also on Wednesday, head coach John Bray’s junior varsity team improved to 6-0 with another pair of convincing victories, whipping the Miners’ JV squad 15-5 and 16-1. Freshman Alayna Pietrantonio set the tone early for the Flivvers with a three-run blast over the wall in center in the first inning of the first game and finished the afternoon with two more hits including a double.

Sophomore Alaysa Bacon had a four-hit day. Sophomore Olivia Scott had three hits with a triple. Freshman Hannah Deuter had three hits with a double, and sophomore Haylee Kasten totaled three hits with a double. Freshman hurlers Gracie Chartier and Jenna Robb earned the victories in the circle.
