Knights take tough two from Nordics

Norway improved to 6-0 in Skyline Conference baseball with 4-1 and 11-6 wins Thursday at North Dickinson.

“North Dickinson battled like we knew they would,” said Knights coach Tony Adams. “A very well-pitched game by both teams in game one.”

Norway’s Owen Baij allowed just two hits in the six-inning opener. He walked two and struck out 12.

Luke Grunlund toed the mound for the Nordics, allowing four hits, walking three and fanning 11.

Baij had a single to drive in two Norway runs and Tristan Lessor also had a single and two RBIs. Cameron Varda doubled and Kelland Amundson added a single.

Hayden Grunlund and Caiden Crites accounted for the Nordics’ hits.

The second game saw the Knights build a 9-2 lead before ND battled back with a four-run fifth, aided by Knights’ miscues.

Varda worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs, walking one and striking out eight. Hunter Langin finished the six-inning win, allowing no hits and whiffing two.

“Our pitchers were good again in game two and our hitters accepted the challenge that was given to them between games,” Adams said. “But we can’t have innings defensively like we did in the fifth. Those kind of innings will end your season in the tournament. Cameron deserved better.”

The Knights totaled 10 hits, including a double and single from Carter Cazzola.

Elliott Kraemer and Varda had two singles each, while Trenton Halvas, Tobi Anderson, Lessor and Baij all singled.

Varda scored twice and had 3 RBIs.

Trenton Kramer doubled and singled for the Nordics, who also got singles from Colten Roberts, Hayden Grunlund, Jason Graham and Mason Florenski. Kramer, Hayden Grunlund and Nathan Conery worked the mound, fanning two and walking seven.

On Monday, Norway (12-5) will host Stephenson, while North Dickinson hosts North Central.

Starting at $3.50/week.
