Ice gets thicker; perch and bluegill are biting

Outdoors Report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Ice conditions are improving and anglers are landing a variety of panfish along with northern pike and walleye.

“They’re doing pretty good on bluegill,” said Doug Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis. “No one particular kind of bait,” he added. “The ice is 4 to 10 inches, depending on the lake or river, and the slush is starting to firm up.”

The pike and walleye catches have been on the small side, he said, while the perch bite has been coming along.

At Whispering Pines Outpost in Breitung Township, John Grier reported bluegill, pike and walleye action. “It’s picking up,” he said. “I’ve been hearing in some places the ice has improved.”

As a note to trappers, Grier said the winter fur pick-up outside his M-95 shop will take place from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. He can be contacted for more information.

Snowmobile trails in Florence and Forest counties are open and in good condition while Marinette County trails are only partially open, according to travelwisconsin.com.

The Dickinson County-based Tri-County Snowmobile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Waucedah Township Hall in Loretto. The club’s trail system has been groomed with a few areas still needing work due to brush and downed trees. Two sections of open water were reported between Felch and LaBranche.
