Bear hunts begin, grouse openers soon

IRON MOUNTAIN — Bear hunting is underway in both Michigan and Wisconsin, with bait, dogs and other legal hunting methods allowed in the Upper Peninsula beginning Monday. The U.P. has an estimated population of nearly 11,000 bears that are at least a year old, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Dogs are prohibited during the first five days of the U.P. hunt, which opened Wednesday. The U.P. season runs through Oct. 26. Volunteers host veterans fishing event in Escanaba

ESCANABA — The second-annual Bay Area Veterans Fishing Derby is happening today in Escanaba. The group is fishing in the morning and then, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time, will meet at the Karas Bandshell in Escanaba’s Ludington Park. They will eat lunch and prizes will be handed out to the veterans at about 1:15 p.m. Prizes will be valued from $50 to $500. Organizers are expecting 40 veterans to be fishing on 20 separate boats.
