DNR sets office hours for Crystal Falls, Norway

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has updated the office hours for its field offices in Crystal Falls and Norway. The Crystal Falls office is at 1420 U.S. 2. The lobby is open weekdays, except Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The office is typically closed from noon until 12:30 p.m. for lunch. The Norway office is at 520 U.S. 2. UP wildfire danger heightens

IRON MOUNTAIN — Dry conditions will result in elevated wildfire potential today, and again this weekend, in portions of the central and western Upper Peninsula, the National Weather Service said. “Avoid outdoor burning,” forecasters said, noting winds could gust as high as 20 to 25 mph today. Thunderstorms will be possible across the western U.P. today, and elsewhere tonight, the weather service said.

DNR advisory group to meet Wednesday at Bay West in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Council will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bay College West in Iron Mountain. The agenda includes a review of proposed deer regulations being considered for action by the Natural Resources Commission in June. IRON MOUNTAIN — Wind and rain hurt last weekend’s Wisconsin fishing opener, but the forecast for Monday’s walleye and northern pike opener in the Upper Peninsula is much more promising as conditions improve as well. “Water temperatures are finally starting to warm up and some crappies have been spotted starting to move into the shallows,” said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis. Elevated levels of PFAS found in rainbow smelt

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Health Services have announced a new PFAS-based consumption advisory for the Bay of Green Bay and its tributaries. Elevated levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a type of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), were detected in rainbow smelt sampled from Green Bay.
