Have some consideration for those laid off due to COVID-19

To all “essential employees”

When your co-workers are being laid-off here are a few things to remember.

Don’t hide in your cubicle; don’t pretend you are too “busy.” Don’t look the other way. Don’t tell them you are so concerned about losing your job, too, and that you cannot even believe it could happen. Don’t ignore them as they leave the building. Don’t act like what happened to them is some sort of “contagious” disease!

Do tell them that you are sorry that this happened and that you hope they will be OK. Do tell them that they will be missed, that they were nice to work with, or even that you would like to hear from them. Shake their hand, pat them on the back or, better yet, give them a hug. Tell them that you will say a prayer for them.

Every person who has lost their job during this COVID-19 pandemic is in a different situation. Some will struggle financially; others will need to begin looking for another job immediately. Some people will endure family problems, marital issues and even suffer spousal abuse. Others may be caretakers of an elderly person or sick child; this will add additional stress for them. Some people may be grieving the loss of a loved one. Others will struggle with substance abuse. Most people will lose their health care coverage, so if they have existing medical conditions, this will be physically challenging as well. Some people will experience mental issues, especially those who struggle with existing problems. In fact, some individuals may have suicidal tendencies. So, we need prayer.

So, during these difficult times, please remember these are/were your co-workers. Whether they worked at your business for one year or 50 years should not make any difference. Treat them like you would want to be treated if this ever happened to you.

Again, please pray for them.
