Clark prevails
at BMW tourney
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Wyndham Clark had reason to feel this was similar to the U.S. Open. He lost a big lead and the crowd was pulling for the other guy, in this case Rory McIlroy.
Clark got the same result at the BMW Championship. He didn’t make a birdie until finishing with three in a row for a 70 at Bellerive and a three-shot victory over Patrick Cantlay. Clark now has three wins this year including a major.
It was a big day for Cantlay, too. His runner-up finish after three straight birdies to end allows him to advance to the Tour Championship.
Scheffler
reveals sickness
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Scottie Scheffler says he was sick at the BMW Championship and he shared just how bad it was. After closing with a 68, Scheffler says he had hand, foot and mouth disease. That causes blisters on his throat, his hands and his feet. He says he was able to walk OK, but he had trouble gripping the club all week. Scheffler had 13 bogeys, which is unusual for him. He hit only 65% of his greens.
He says he probably should have withdrawn considering nothing was at stake this week in terms of his position in the FedEx Cup.
Kittle off
PUP list
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle was taken off the physically unable to perform list, providing hope that he might be able to return from a ruptured right Achilles tendon before the season opener.
The 49ers got good news on the injury front 10 days before the team was set to depart for Australia for a Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 11 with both Kittle and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey both back at practice. The Niners are scheduled to leave for Australia on Sept. 2.
Haaland trims
his locks
MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Erling Haaland’s famed flowing locks are no more. The Manchester City superstar has a new hairstyle for the new Premier League season: A buzz cut that went viral on social media on Sunday ahead of the team’s opening match against Bournemouth.
It didn’t help him as the Norway striker missed a couple of great chances in City’s 2-1 win at Etihad Stadium. The Norway striker has become one of the most easily distinguishable sport stars because of his long hair.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Zlatan Ibrahimovic asked if Haaland had “lost a bet” when the City striker showed him his new hairstyle.
Jackson injured
on kickoff
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Philadelphia Eagles running back Ja’Quinden Jackson was taken off the field in an ambulance after being injured on the opening kickoff Saturday night in a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
The Eagles announced that Jackson had strength and movement in all extremities and had been taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Jackson was on the kickoff team and made the tackle, but he laid motionless after New England’s Lan Larison was tackled at the 25.
Trainers rushed in almost immediately as medical personnel from both teams attended to Jackson. They quickly called for a backboard and ambulance.
