KINGSFORD — Generally speaking, weather is usually somewhat predictable. One can expect slight changes now and again. What happened between Sunday and Monday morning makes us wonder who made Mother Nature mad?

The anticipation of fresh coffee, warm doughnuts and great conversation over-rode the weather and brought the seniors together at the Golden K meeting on Monday. It was a special time sharing tales of weekend escapades and connections to family and friends.

Gilbert Engel as chairman for March got the meeting started.

June Stone and Paul Youngblood were the welcomed guests. Happy Birthday went to Lorraine Jacobs on March 25, and Walter Jensen on March 27. Jeannine Polkinghorne was excited to receive her winnings from the 50-50 drawing.

Sue LeDuc on piano had the group singing under the dexterous directing of Bill Roberts. Oldies were sung, concluding with “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”

Several Golden K members have discovered Irish blood in their ancestry. It came as a surprise to guest Paul Youngblood and others when they traced their family history.

Our tale of the day comes through the ancestry experience of Youngblood. He had always felt different and was curious about his ancestral background. There were many unanswered questions.

Youngblood knew he was adopted. His current family was great and he had grown up with other adopted siblings. Curiosity crept into his life and he wondered who his birth parents were. He found his birth mom and she told him that her current husband was his father.

With technology opening doors for people to check their family history, Youngblood sent his DNA in for testing. The results indicated that the man he thought was his father was a 99% no. After additional time and investigating, he was able to delve deeper into his ancestry background. He discovered a possible cousin. This was a link to his biological father.

Youngblood lead the Golden K on his intensive journey to connect to his father. It was a man who knew nothing about him. Imagine the feelings, emotions and questions that evolved as Youngblood connected to his “real dad,” Golden K member Gary Proudfit. Proudfit was surprised, and his wife Sue was even more stunned.

Youngblood wished to meet his birth father and was invited to the Proudfit home. He met Gary, Sue and their entire family. Finally reaching his goal, he discovered his father and a whole new family. The entire Proudfit family welcomed him into their circle. A long journey ended happily for all.

The March 27 meeting at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford will feature Golden K member Joe Santi. He assured the Golden K that he has surprising stories to tell about the northside of Iron Mountain. If you are intrigued the program starts at 10:30 a.m.

Gilbert Engel gave the Golden K members a profound thought for the day. “Grass is always greener — when you water it.” Considering that and not to be outdone, Jeannine Polkinghorne related one of her favorites.

“Three things you will not hear when you pray.”

1. Busy signal.

2. Can I put you on hold .

3. God is not available to take your call.

Upon leaving, the Golden K seniors pondered these treasures of information and wondered “What will next Monday be like?”
