KINGSFORD — Monday always follows Sunday. It’s a fact that one can count on. Weather, however, is not so predictable. Frost greeted the Golden K members as they made their way to the fellowship hall at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.
Chairman Vance Uhazie rang the bell to get the meeting started. Sue LeDuc took her place at the piano and Lois Outcelt directed the singing. “Let there Be Peace on Earth,” “I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover” and “Let the Rest of the World Go By” were a few songs brightening the day.
Happy Birthday goes to Al Calcari on May 24, and Lois Chartier on May 27. Happy 65th Anniversary is wished for the Jouppis on May 25. Jeannine Polkinghorne won the 50-50 drawing for the second week in a row. Happy Dollar thoughts were few, however, one fit perfectly for all of us. We are happy just to be here and appreciate each other.

Dorleen Uhazie introduced guest speaker Cathy Lundy from Bianco’s Fitness Center. She attended Iron Mountain and Northern Michigan University. Lundy has been involved in the fitness industry her entire life. She began her work in high school for Community Schools teaching gymnastics. She coached and judged gymnastics for many years at the high school level. She received certification to teach fitness classes and personal training about 25 years ago. She has worked at Bianco’s Center since they opened. She and her husband Paul have three children and five grandchildren.
Lundy demonstrated various moves utilized in the Silver Sneakers Program. This program is designed to help senior remain strong, healthy and flexible. With the assistance of Sue LeDuc, Dorleen Uhazie and Bill Bowman, Lundy demonstrated balance and hand-eye coordination using a ball. She encouraged strength building for arms using a flexible band. She also had members try a chair exercise — rise from a sitting to standing position without pushing yourself up or pulling up on a near-by object. It sounds easy so give it a try or two. Everyone can use these methods at any age to remain active.
The Silver Sneakers program is sometimes covered by health insurance. Bianco’s staff will be happy to answer questions and assist you with other financial options.
Hydraulic Falls Road behind Pizza Hut in Iron Mountain is possibly the cleanest road in the county. Nine of the seniors from Monday’s meeting did a volunteer roadside clean-up today.
