RiseUP event planned on Zoom

HANCOCK — Due to the Coronavirus, riseUP and the Carnegie Museum have rescheduled the “Beyond Brothels & Bars” presentation as a Zoom event.

“Beyond Brothels & Bars: Discovering Women’s Roles in One Mining Community,” an illustrated live-stream talk by Author Jean F. Ellis, moderated by Faith Morrison.

The event is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. Questions and discussion will follow. Ellis, local history enthusiast and board member of the Keweenaw Heritage Center, presents evidence of what the women in Calumet Township were doing in 1910.

Ellis’ book, published in 2020 and available in local stores, draws on the census and other data to raise questions and to paint a more complete picture of the history of that time. She also challenges us as to how we know the things we know.

To enjoy the presentation “live” please click on the URL below up to ten minutes before the start of the program. During the presentation you may ask questions through the Zoom chat. The event will be recorded and archived on the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw website, https://carnegiekeweenaw.org/. This presentation is sponsored by the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw and riseUP.
