Stuart Memorial Scholarship presented
KINGSFORD — Dillon LaValley and Lydia Wilson of Kingsford High School were recognized for their significant contributions and involvement with the Kingsford High School band as recipients of the first and one-time Bruce Stuart Memorial Scholarship. They each received $1,000.
LaValley is the son of Peter and Laura LaValley of Kingsford. He plans to study education and participate in extracurricular musical activities at Northern Michigan University. LaValley was the drumline leader at KHS during his senior year.
Wilson is the daughter of Erik and Stephanie Wilson of Kingsford. She plans to study nursing and participate in extracurricular musical activities at Albion College in Albion, Mich.
Stuart was born on April 17, 1928, and graduated from KHS in 1946. He was a member of the band and played the trombone. He received an outstanding band student award his senior year. With his love of music, he became a piano tuner and rebuilt pipe organs as a career.
He had several grandchildren graduate from KHS and loved attending all their extracurricular activities, especially musical events.
As a tribute to him, the family chose to contribute all memorial money to fund a scholarship in his memory. They pray that the scholarship is put to good use and that the recipients of this money have as many fond memories of the Kingsford Flivvers as their father did.
