Children’s theater summer workshop returns

Volunteer musician and Crystal Theatre board member Betty Soderberg provides live musical accompaniment for rehearsals and live performance of “Gulliver’s Travels” in 2019.

Crystal Falls — The Missoula Children’s Theatre returns to the Crystal Theatre to present a five-day workshop and production of “Sleeping Beauty,” a rock ‘n’ roll fable for the ages. There is no cost for students in first through 12th grades to participate.

Audition will be Monday at The Crystal Theatre. There are roles for up to 50 students entering first through 12th grade this fall. Students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT tour actor/director. Registration will take place from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Students wishing to audition must be registered and in the auditorium by 10 a.m. and stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal will begin about 30 minutes after the audition. There is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play.

This is a group audition — no advance preparation is necessary. Rehearsals will be conducted every day from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the theatre and stage left at the Crystal Theatre. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and, if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. The performance will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, in the historic Crystal Theatre. Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre and has been touring extensively for more than 40 years, from Montana to Japan. This year it will visit nearly 1,200 communities with up to 44 teams of tour actor/directors. A tour team arrives in a given town with a set, lights, costumes, props and makeup — everything it takes to put on a play … except the cast. The team has an open audition and casts 50 to 60 local students to perform in the production.

The show is rehearsed throughout the week and a public performance is presented Friday evening. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales … a twist on the classic stories that most know and love. Also included in the residency are three enrichment workshops presented by the tour actor/directors.

MCT at Crystal Theatre is funded in part by a grant from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Copper Country Arts Council. For more information, go to www.TheCrystalTheatre.org, or reach out to info@CrystalTheatre.org, or call 906-875-3208.

Starting at $3.50/week.
