Library events set for March
IRON MOUNTAIN –Upcoming events in the Dickinson County Library system include–
— Endangered Animals Storytime: Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
These programs for children through age 5 include stories, songs, and a fun craft to take home. Registration is required; call the local library site starting one week before the program to sign up. Storytimes can be streamed live on Zoom for interested patrons; call 906-774-1218 to inquire or check the events calendar on the library’s website, www.dcl-lib.org, for more information.
— Lego Club: Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This month’s theme is Disaster Island; kids in third through eighth grades may build a project based on this theme or use their imagination to build whatever they want. Registration is required and is limited to 10 participants. Call the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain at 906-774-1218 starting one week before the program to sign up. Lego Club creations will be displayed in the children’s room until the next club meeting.
— 12th annual Prom Dress Swap: 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This event invites teens to choose a dress and accessories — such as a matching tie, shoes and jewelry — free of charge. Teens do not need to donate an item nor be a library card holder in order to participate. All are welcome. This year, a prize drawing is offered for two tuxedo rentals from Nic’s Boutique. Teens may stop into the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain any time between this Saturday and Sunday, March 20, to enter the drawing — one entry is allowed per day. All branches are now accepting donations of clean and gently used dresses, ties, shoes and accessories during library hours. Donations will be accepted through Friday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain, and through Thursday at the Solomonson and North Dickinson branches. All donors and attendees will be entered into a prize drawing. This event wouldn’t be possible without generous donations from the public, as well as the Friends of the Library and many sponsors.
— All ages are welcome to enter the 2022 Bookmark Contest beginning the week of Monday, March 7. Entry forms will be available at the circulation desks of all branches, and must be returned to any branch by Friday, March 25. They will display entries at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain for public voting from April 3 through 9. In addition, entries will be posted to the library’s Facebook page that week; the entries with the most “likes” will get one extra vote. Winners will be chosen for each age group, and the winning bookmarks will be available at the library and in the Summer Reading registration bags.
— Super Mario Scavenger Hunt: Thursday, March 10, at 4 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This scavenger hunt for kids in third through eighth grades has a special Super Mario theme. The hunt will contain clues and activities that will lead up to rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser. — On the Hunt. Yooperlites, Agates and Fossils of the Great Lakes: Thursday, March 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Learn about some of the Great Lakes’ geological treasures from Rob Martignon, who spends his summers as a lighthouse keeper and has honed his skills at rock hunting. He will share information and tips on how to spot Yooperlites, agates and fossils, and will show samples.
— Exploration Stations: Dr. Seuss: Saturday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson Branch in Norway and 1 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Celebrate March is Reading Month with fun Dr. Seuss-inspired activities for children in preschool through second grade. Activities include a photo booth, Stack the Cats STEM challenge, and character-themed crafts. No registration is required.
— St. Patrick’s Day Storytime: Tuesday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and Thursday, March 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.

— Registration opens Monday, March 21, for Teen Subscription Boxes available for pickup on Monday, April 4, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Boxes have a different theme each month and include a library book, treats, some other fun items, and a book review form. Both the library book and the box must be returned, but participants may keep all other items. The program is limited to the first five teen registrants each month. Stop in at any library site to fill out a registration form in person. A new registration form must be filled out each month to receive the next subscription box.
— Ladies of the Lights: Monday, March 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
In honor of Women’s History Month, author Dianna Stampfler will present a program about the women who have taken on the dangerous and physically demanding job of tending lighthouses from the early 1840s to present day. She will include readings from newspapers and autobiographies, as well as a list of featured ladies and additional reading references.
— Pop Up Storytime at Fireflies: Tuesday, March 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Fireflies, 724 Main St. in Norway.
This special off-site storytime session allows children in fifth grade and younger to enjoy early literacy activities such as stories, songs and a fun craft kit to take home. No registration is required.
— Lego Club Jr.: Tuesday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
By patron request, a Lego Club is being added for younger children in kindergarten through second grade. This month’s theme is animals, but participants may build anything they want. This popular program is being brought back for kids in third through eighth grades. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of Xbox games.
