IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library has announced upcoming events for May.
— The library’s Summer Reading 2022 Coloring Contest kicks off Monday, when children in preschool through fifth grade can begin picking up posters at all three library sites while supplies last. Color a poster and return to any site by Monday, May 23. Entries will be displayed at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and on the library’s Facebook page for public voting between Tuesday, May 31, and Sunday, June 5. They will announce winners on the first day of Summer Reading on Monday, June 13.
— Flowers Storytime: Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Solomonson branch in Norway.
These programs for children through age 5 include stories, songs and a fun craft to take home. Registration is required by calling the local library site to sign up starting one week before the program. Storytimes can be streamed live on Zoom for interested patrons — call 906-774-1218 to inquire or check the events calendar on the library’s website, www.dcl-lib.org, for more information.
— Lego Club: Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain and Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Norway branch.
This month’s theme is the ocean, which is also this year’s Summer Reading theme; kids in third through eighth grades may build a project based on this theme or use their imagination to build whatever they want. This month’s Lego Club creations will be displayed in both sites as Summer Reading decorations. No registration required.
— The Dickinson County Library has been accepted into Diamond Comics’ Free Comic Book Day program, so they will be giving out free comics at the library starting Saturday, May 7. Comics are geared toward ages 8 and older, and are rated “A” for all ages. One comic per patron will be given out while supplies last.
— Stormtrooper Attack: Saturday, May 7, at noon at the main library in Iron Mountain.
Get ready for a Storm Trooper battle. Kids in third through eighth grades will be separated into teams. They will create as many Storm Troopers as they can out of toilet paper rolls, construction paper and glue; strategically set them up for battle; then use NERF guns to knock down the other team’s Storm Troopers. Whichever team knocks down the opposing Storm Troopers first wins. Spots are limited, so those interested should register by calling the Dickinson County Library starting one week before the program.
— Book Breakdowns — Zombie Apocalypse with Joshua Chadd: Saturday, May 7, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.
Local author Joshua Chadd will discuss his young adult/adult science fiction and fantasy books, as well as tips for self-publishing. He has been a No. 1 Amazon bestseller, and his series, “The Brother’s Creed,” has won several awards. Chadd will have books available for sale, and will sign copies. For teens and adults.
— Bow Wows and Books: Wednesday, May 11, at 5 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.
Kids of all ages are invited to read to or go for a walk with Yooper Paws of Love therapy dog Azul, a husky mix, and his owner, Penny. Each session is 15 minutes. Spots are extremely limited, so registration is required starting one week before the program by calling the Iron Mountain library.
— Elder Law –Securing Your Legacy: Saturday, May 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.
Attorneys Jacob Spear and Josie Yelle will share key information and important tips for planning financial and autonomous freedoms for elderly people and those caring for them. A basic overview on how to get started with elder law issues and the planning process will be covered.
— Mental Health Storytime: Tuesday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.

— Paws Enforcing Laws: Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Iron Mountain Police Department, 111 E. Fleshiem St. in Iron Mountain.
Iron Mountain Police Officer Adam Ray and his K-9 Falcon will demonstrate a “takedown” for teens and adults. Ray will also discuss Falcon’s training, equipment and answer questions. Patrons are asked to meet at the police station for this program.
— Gamers’ Club: Monday, May 23, at 4 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.
This month’s theme is “Throwback to the 2000s,” so the group will be playing a game of participants’ choosing on the Wii console. Although this program is geared toward kids in third through eighth grades, all ages are welcome. Registration is required and is limited to 10 participants, so . call the Dickinson County Library to sign up starting one week before the program.
— Lego Club Jr.: Tuesday, May 24, at 4 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain and Thursday, May 26, at 4 p.m. at the Norway branch.
This Lego Club for younger children in kindergarten through second grade is perfect for budding engineers. This month’s theme is “Under the Sea,” but participants may build anything they want and then discuss their creation. Registration is required and limited to 10 participants, so call the local library site to sign up starting one week before the program.
— Doctor Dogs-Medical Alert and Response to the Rescue: Wednesday, May 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the main library in Iron Mountain.
Penny Beeman and Shanna Stanley-Hall will introduce and talk about their medical response dogs, Azul and Maverick. They will cover information about how these dogs are trained, the types of alerts they do, the benefits of having these types of dogs, and who is eligible for this type of service animal. For teens and adults.
