School District of Florence County lists several scholarship winners

FLORENCE, Wis. –Florence County High School has announced its 2022 seniors who have been awarded local scholarships from generous donors for their continuing education.

Two $500 Forever Young Memorial Scholarships are offered in memory of FHS students Paige Raspor and Isabella Burrows, who are remembered for their love of sports and the arts. These scholarships have been awarded to Kiera Sullivan and Elizabeth LaChapelle.

Sullivan is the daughter of Henry Sullivan and Sarah Western of Florence. She is one of the Class of 2022’s co-salutatorians, with a 3.99 grade-point average. Her favorite subjects are art and Spanish. Throughout high school, Sullivan participated in a variety of activities including basketball, track and field, cross country, High-Q, National Honor Society, and TORPEDOs (Together Our Responsibility Publicly Embraces Direction and Opportunity). She has earned a variety of Athletic Scholar Awards, was a finalist in a statewide art competition, and was named 1st Team All-Conference during her junior cross country season, She plans to major in architecture at Washington University in St. Louis this fall.

LaChapelle is the daughter of Meaghan LaChapelle and (stepdad) Chris Haker of Florence. She has maintained high grades and been on the honor roll all four years of her high school career. She has participated in TORPEDOs, the FHS service organization, for three years, where she volunteered in various projects in the community and school. LaChapelle plans to major in wildlife ecology at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

LaChapelle was also awarded the Florence County Land Scholarship in Memory of Robert R. Peterson in the amount of $6,477.

KIERA SULLIVAN

Florence County School District is honored to receive scholarship funding for a senior with aspirations to continue their post-secondary studies in the natural sciences and pursue a degree in fisheries, wildlife, forestry, soils, geology or environmental studies.

In order to qualify for consideration, eligible seniors were required to submit as part of their application an outline of their high school achievements and future plans in their chosen field. This is the second awarding of the scholarship.

Logan Burrows was awarded a $1,500 scholarship in memory of Betty and Ray Bourassa, given by former FHS student Joe Bourassa, for someone from the Aurora or Homestead area pursuing a degree in the trades or four-year college. He is the son of Linda Burrows and Jon Burrows of Fence.

During high school Burrows has received recognition for his artistic talents in Art 3. He plans to pursue a degree in entrepreneurship and business management at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.

The Tim Touchett Legacy Scholarship was established in 2015 in memory of former FHS graduate Staff Sgt. Tim Touchett, who passed away in 2014 after complications from surgery meant to embolize an arteriovenous fistula that ruptured near his brain stem. Money is raised for this scholarship through an annual cornhole tournament held every summer in Delavan, Wis. This year the Touchett family awarded their scholarship to Makenzie Niehaus, the daughter of Ben and Melanie Niehaus of Florence.

ELIZABETH LACHAPELLE

She is ranked number four in her class with a GPA of 3.963. During her time in high school, Niehaus earned a total of 28 college credits, with one of her favorite classes being Introduction to Business Law. She is president of Florence’s chapter of the National Honor Society. She also is a member of the forensics team, TORPEDOs, and was part of the Florence band and jazz band.

Outside of school, she is an active member within her church. During her high school years she has maintained either high honor roll or superior honor roll and has earned various class outstanding achievement awards, music performance awards, and forensics awards.

Niehaus plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. With this degree she hopes to attend law school to fulfill her dream of becoming a child advocacy lawyer.
