Local Special Olympics athletes reach state competition

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Eight athletes representing Area 38 Dickinson-Iron Special Olympics traveled to Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant for the 2025 State Summer Games May 29-31.
Bocce
— Charles White won a gold medal in singles and bronze medal in doubles;
— Mike Bonetti won a silver medal in doubles and gold medal in singles.
— Tim Brigham took fourth place in doubles and silver medal in singles;
— Peter Brigham won a silver medal in doubles and fourth in singles;
— Dan Brigham earned a bronze medal in doubles and fourth for singles;
— Pat Bonetti won a silver medal in singles and fourth place in doubles;
Two athletes participated in track and field events.
— Louis Post won a gold medal in the 50-meter dash and standing long jump; and placed fifth in 100-meter dash.
— Louie Post won a gold medal in 100-meter dash, silver in 50-meter dash, and was fourth in standing long jump.
About 4,000 people took part in the weekend, including athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers.
During opening ceremonies, Louis Post and Trooper Geno Basanese from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post led the torch run into the stadium to hand off to fellow athletes and law enforcement to light the torch for the games.
