Trump marks

80th birthday

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump marked turning 80 on Sunday by hailing an agreement to end the war in Iran hours before a birthday celebration that once would have seemed unfathomable: a cage-fighting show on the storied South Lawn of the White House.

“This event is a one of one event, incredible event. I love it,” said UFC chief Dana White, a close friend of the president, during a Friday night hype session at the Lincoln Memorial where pairs of fighters shoved and scuffled for the cameras under the stoic gaze of Honest Abe’s marble likeness.

The president has sought to tie Sunday’s event — which was to feature seven fights running past midnight — to larger, months-long celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Sunday night’s forecast predicted a strong chance of thunderstorms and high winds.

Collins gets

endorsement

WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) — In the closing stretch of Georgia’s Republican U.S. Senate runoff, Rep. Mike Collins is celebrating his 11th-hour endorsement from Donald Trump.

Collins on Sunday dismissed any ideas that the Republican president’s stamp of approval is a risky bet in a potential showdown with Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. Trump disclosed his choice of Collins over former football coach Derek Dooley in a middle-of-the-night social media post that praised the second-term congressman for his loyalty.

The Republican candidates are competing Tuesday for the chance to unseat Ossoff in one of the most closely watched campaigns in the November midterm elections. Dooley, a political newcomer, is backed by outgoing Gov. Brian Kemp, who has clashed with Trump in the past.

Britain stops

oil tanker

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s armed forces have boarded and detained a sanctioned tanker, the Smyrtos, in the English Channel. The U.K. Defense Ministry described the operation as its first of this kind.

The vessel is suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” used to ship oil in breach of sanctions imposed over Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The ship was boarded Sunday and will be held and monitored off England’s south coast while investigations continue. The operation was carried out alongside French authorities, who have previously intercepted similar vessels.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the action sends a message that those supporting Russia’s war effort “cannot hide.”

Tyra Banks

sues Netflix

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyra Banks has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix and the directors of “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model.” She contends in the lawsuit filed Saturday that they edited her interviews to create a false narrative.

Banks says she was interviewed for over three hours, but the footage was cut to 16 minutes and misrepresented her statements. Her lawyers allege that the edits suggest Banks allowed a contestant to be assaulted and used it for ratings. Banks is seeking damages and an injunction against using her image on a related album.

Emails seeking comment were sent Sunday to representatives for the defendants and for Banks.
