MTU listed in guide of ‘green’ institutions

HOUHGTON – Michigan Technological University is listed in the Princeton Review’s 2015 Guide to 353 Green Colleges.

The new guide to “the most environmentally responsible” colleges recognizes institutions with exceptional commitments to sustainability, based on their academic offerings, career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives and activities.

The free 218-page guide is downloadable at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide. There, users can find detailed “Green Facts” write-ups on the 353 schools.

The write-ups report on everything from the school’s use of renewable energy, recycling and conservation programs to the availability of environmental studies and career guidance for green jobs.

The Guide to Green Colleges recognized Michigan Tech for offering free or reduced-price bus passes and a free campus shuttle, for its bicycle plan including secure bike storage, for a car-sharing program, for having a university sustainability committee, for offering sustainability-focused degrees, for the fact that 100 percent of students are required to take a sustainability-related course, for having 72 percent of new construction LEED-certified and for employing a sustainability officer.

“We work hard to make Michigan Tech an environmentally friendly, sustainable campus, and it’s encouraging to be recognized nationally for that effort,” said President Glenn Mroz.
