New bariatric surgeon coming to UP Health System – Marquette

MARQUETTE – Paul Kemmeter, M.D., F.A.C.S., will soon be performing bariatric surgery at UP Health System – Marquette.

Dr. Kemmeter is a senior partner and one of four surgeons comprising Grand Health Partners (GHP), which is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich. As part of a three-year contract between UP Health System and GHP, beginning in June Dr. Kemmeter will provide bariatric services and will have regularly scheduled office hours and OR block times at UPHS Marquette.

Dr. Kemmeter is expected to be performing surgery at UPHS Marquette in June.

Dr. Kemmeter’s joining the UPHS Medical Staff closes the gap recently experienced at the Bariatric and Weight Loss Institute. His expertise and experience will once again ensure that the entire UP region has a high quality, close-to-home option for bariatric surgery.

He received his B.S. from University of Michigan and his M.D. degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He is an associate clinical professor of surgery for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and currently serves as an assistant program director of the GRMEP-MSU General Surgery residency program. He is also the medical director of Bariatric Surgery at Mercy Health St. Mary’s in Grand Rapids.

He was highly recommended by Dr. Wayne English, former medical director of the UPHS Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, who last year accepted a medical faculty position at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The UPHS Marquette Bariatric and Metabolic Institute program is classified as a Center of Distinction and is fully accredited as a comprehensive bariatric center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
