“We are really excited to branch out and expand. It’s going to be an extension of our showroom and going to offer more products. This is going to be one-of-a-kind in Iron Mountain and we are really excited about what we are going to offer,” said Carol Quandt, chief operations officer for 41 Lumber.

While 41 Lumber has a location in Quinnesec, it wasn’t enough to showcase what the company can provide to homeowners.

“We have a fairly small footprint (in the Iron Mountain area) and we want to expand into the kitchen and bath,” Quandt said. “We have showrooms in Houghton, Marquette and Escanaba, but we didn’t have the room at the Quinnesec location. There is so much great stuff going on downtown and I want us to be a part of our community.”

With the company-wide slogan “Building your dreams, one project at a time,” 41 Lumber is a full-service material supply and design company that employs a combined number of 75 people across all locations. It has six locations in the Upper Peninsula — Quinnesec, Houghton, Laurium, Escanaba, Marquette and Munising.

Their services range from custom homes to decks.

“At the new design center, we will offer virtual reality walkthroughs of their home designs so our customers can be 100 percent satisfied with the design of their new home,” Quandt said.

Local companies Gundlach Champion, Sikora and Bastian Electric are building the Iron Mountain design center in the former Hahner Law Offices and Perina’s Ladies apparel location at 321 S. Stephenson in downtown Iron Mountain.

Although construction began in February, the project is two months behind schedule because of the COVID-19 shutdown. They now plan to open in early fall.

“There is no project too small for our team. We supply better products for better results, so our customers know their projects will last. And our knowledgeable team is here to help you get your project done right,” Quandt said.

Carol Quandt is the great-granddaughter of Albert W. Quandt Sr. In 1925, Edward A. Hamar and Albert W. Quandt Sr. purchased the Pryor Lumber Company and renamed it Hamar Quandt Company.

It consisted of several large warehouses and a multi-purpose building, with a large bandsaw for re-sawing timbers for the local mines, a planer, a profiler and a shop to manufacture windows and doors.

In 1975, they opened a yard in Marquette and named it 41 Lumber. In 1980, they moved the company headquarters to W 7404 U.S. 2 in Quinnesec, opening a yard and distribution center.

The Quinnesec store carries a large stock of building products for commercial and residential construction, remodeling and redecorating.

“We try to carry the better-quality building materials and we buy a higher grade of lumber,” Quandt said.

The company can deliver to almost any job site in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin.

They are the primary U.P. dealer for products such as Taylor Entry Doors, Kemper Echo, Kemper and Decora Cabinets, Windows by Unlimited Vinyl Windows and Amvic Insulated Concrete Forms.
