Bergman to address Veterans Assistance Fair at Bay West

Service providers to be on site Saturday in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — Congressman Jack Bergman is scheduled as the keynote speaker at the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin Veterans Assistance Fair from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Bay College West in Iron Mountain.

Bergman, R-Watersmeet, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant general, is the highest-ranking military official ever elected to Congress. He serves on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Bergman’s address is scheduled for 9:10 a.m.

“He is to be followed by John Drumsta of the Detroit VA, who is a nationally recognized expert on Agent Orange, burn pit respiratory problems, and Camp Lejeune and Fort McClellan water,” said committee member Dennis Lynch of Norway. “Bay West would be a good place for veterans or their families to be on Saturday. We will also have several major local employers who will help veterans with job applications and may even be able to hire on the spot.”

The Veterans Assistance Fair will include informational presentations, breakout sessions and booths about:

— Military exposures and related health conditions, such as Agent Orange and Camp Lejeune;

— A VA benefits question and answer session;

— VA health care: Eligibility, woman veterans, recovery programs, suicide prevention;

— VA education benefits;

— VA CH 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program;

— The Escanaba Vet Center;

— MSU Extension programs and family-friendly activities;

— Veteran-friendly employers;

— And numerous other topics.

A variety of service providers will be on site to assist veterans, family members and dependents from across the U.P. and northern Wisconsin.

The Dickinson County Veteran Affairs Committee is partnering with the Upper Peninsula Veterans Community Action Team, Michigan State University Extension, Dickinson Area Community Foundation, Veterans Alliance of Dickinson County Area, and numerous other service providers and local businesses across the U.P. and northern Wisconsin for the event.
