Memorial Day parade route approved in IM
Outdoor farmers market to begin June 1
IRON MOUNTAIN — Plans are in place for a Memorial Day observation May 27 in downtown Iron Mountain, including a short parade.
The city council this week approved the traditional parade route, using East Ludington Street as the assembly area. Staging will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the parade will step off at 8:45 a.m.
The parade proceeds south on Stephenson Avenue. Participants will gather for a program in front of the Dickinson County Courthouse at the intersection of East D Street. Stephenson Avenue will serve as the audience area until approximately 10 a.m.
After the ceremony, the Iron Mountain High School band will proceed east on Cedar Street to the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, said Denise Formolo of the Dickinson County Office of Veterans Affairs.
In other news, the Iron Mountain council:
— Approved closing a portion of a city parking lot adjacent to A Street behind Downtown Plaza for the weekly Farmers & Artisans Market beginning June 1. The closure is from 7 a.m. to noon each Saturday through Oct. 19. Last year, the market drew an average of 200 people weekly, according to Paula Craven, Downtown Development Authority director.
— Approved closing part of the city parking lot at the intersection of East Hughitt and Iron Mountain streets in front of the community stage for the weekly Out to Lunch concert series beginning June 13. The closure is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 15, except for July 4. Also, Iron Mountain Street will be closed during performances from about 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
— At the request of the Dickinson County Bike Path Committee, approved a resolution in support of National Bicycle Month in May. The designation includes Bike to Work week May 13-17. Bicycling activities and attractions have great potential for a positive impact on Michigan’s economy and tourism industry and can stimulate economic development by making the state attractive to businesses and citizens who appreciate the benefits of a bicycle-friendly community, the resolution says.
