Fourth grade students at Florence Elementary School participated in tour of the Florence County Courthouse and former jail on Thursday. Students were told of the history and architecture of both the courthouse and the jail dating back to its construction in 1889. As they toured the interior, students met with the four elected officials and learned of their jobs in carrying out the work of the county. The county offices of the clerk, register of deeds, treasurer and courts were visited. Each April, the Florence County Historical Society has a power point presentation on the county’s history and as a follow up, leads the tour of the courthouse and former jail. Wisconsin and local history are part of the required curriculum for all fourth graders.
