IM school board approves emergency plan

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain School Board has approved a plan for dealing with possible threats or emergencies on school grounds.

Having the state-required emergency operations plan will make the district eligible to apply for grants next year to put some of those steps in place, Superintendent Jerry Sardina told the board Wednesday.

In creating the plan, staff tried to consider every potential scenario, Sardina said. One proposed procedure change is not leaving the school for a fire alarm; instead, students would remain in classrooms on lockdown while staff investigate the situation. Sometimes a fire alarm is pulled just to draw students outside the school, he explained, adding the district has had only one school fire reported in the past 50 years.

The plan also sets down who would be in charge of what actions in different situations and lists important phone numbers. It addresses as well how to handle if students are shipped to another site and reuniting them with parents or guardians.

They are working on a quick reference sheet for each classroom so staff can easily access the information.

Sardina also would like to see each classroom have “go bags” stocked with items and equipment needed if students have to endure an extended lockdown.

In other business, the board:

— Hired Elizabeth Bray as a Title I teacher at North Elementary School and Kyle Kujala Korpela as a tech assistant.

— Accepted retirements for Mark Herman and Carol Maloney.

Starting at $3.50/week.
