Brasure named to lead Niagara School Board

NIAGARA, Wis. — The Niagara School Board has changed its meeting day to 5 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month.

Until it can be officially switched at the annual meeting in August, they will change the date monthly. The next meeting will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20.

At its re-organizational meeting April 27, Ann Brasure was chosen as the new board president; she previously was board treasurer. Lisa Swanson was re-elected as vice president, Julie Neuens becomes treasurer and Patti Sparapani will be the clerk.

The board welcomed new members Debra Tauriainen and Joe Champeau, who ran unopposed in the April election. Former members Tracy Coppens and Susan Moll did not seek re-election.

In other business, the board:

— Accepted Debra Phillips’ retirement as district transportation coordinator. Superintendent Nate Burklund called Phillips a “tremendous person” who will be missed.

— Was told Miron Construction of Green Bay, Wis., construction manager for the district, would be on site to continue examining buildings so the board will have a better idea about needed repairs and replacement costs. Burklund said although the district has done a good job maintaining school property, many potential major expenses remain.

— Learned school administrators are looking at ways to host a virtual graduation ceremony for the seniors. Diplomas and scholarships would be handed out in person after Memorial Day. The schedule for virtual programs is academic awards, today at 6:30 p.m.; athletic awards, Sunday at 6 p.m., and graduation, Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m. For more information, go to https://www.niagara.k12.wi.us/.

— Also heard that administration has discussed but not decided whether virtual school classes will have grades or be pass/fail.

— Tabled a decision on paying coaches for spring activities. Burklund said other districts were mixed on the matter, with some paying the coaches and others not. Sparapani thought the board should be careful with how they spend money, especially with the potential need for a building referendum.

— Learned the district’s health insurance will increase 5.5%.
