Iron, Florence fairs canceled

County fairs will not be held this year in Iron County or in Florence County, Wis.

Carrie Nelson, Iron County Fair Association manager, said the Iron County Market Animal Club is continuing with plans to have its animal auction on Aug. 7, with details to be announced.

Also, O’Claire Productions hopes to put on the annual demolition derby Aug. 8 and Zach Gagnea, horse department superintendent, is considering having a horse event during what would normally be fair weekend in Iron River.

“He will let us know and we will share the information as it is presented,” Nelson said. “It is still an unpredictable future, but kudos to those that are doing their best to make things happen in Iron County.”

Raffle tickets will still be available from fair board members. The cost is $5 each or 5 for $20. Proceeds go toward utility bills and maintenance at the fairgrounds.

The Florence County Agricultural Society and Fair Board will look ahead to the 2021 fair, scheduled for Aug. 27-29, said Jessica Klumpp, executive director. Any vendor payments that have already been submitted will be refunded or will be held for the 2021 fair, she said.

The fair board communicated with Florence County health officials, the Wisconsin Association of Fairs, the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, the CDC, insurance companies and others in the fair industry as it deliberated on whether to hold a 2020 event Klumpp said.

“With the future of social gatherings unknown the fair board, as a united front, decided this is the only action to take to ensure our fairgoers and our fair family stay healthy during a time of such uncertainty,” Klumpp said.

A decision on the Dickinson County Fair, held over the Labor Day weekend in Norway, will likely be made in July, according to John Degenaer Jr., fair board chairman.

This year’s Marinette County Fair in Wausaukee, Wis., is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 27-30.
