WAUSAUKEE, Wis. — Organizers are determined to go forward with the Marinette County Fair in August, despite most other similar events being canceled amid COVID-19 concerns.
The four-day fair for now is set for Aug. 27-30 at the fairgrounds in Wausaukee.
While it will have a new carnival after the original contractor pulled out and perhaps fewer vendors, the fair still will have four of the usual five grandstand events, live music and performers in the children’s area stage, said Jessica Markiewicz, Marinette County Fair Board treasurer.
“The fair may have a little different feel to it, it may look a little different, but we’re doing the best we can,” Markiewicz said.
The board considered several options, knowing other fairs in the region had been called off or scaled back to just competitions for 4-H youth. But the goal always was to find a way to have as full a fair as possible, she said.

With proper precautions, “we decided we would be able to host the event that everybody has come to enjoy every year,” Markiewicz said.
The fairgrounds already had hand sanitizer and washing stations at every barn for cleaning up after being around livestock, Markiewicz said. Now, “we’re just adding a lot more.” Face masks also will be available.
All judging events remain “on track,” she said, with livestock set to be in the show ring through the day Friday, Aug. 28, culminating in the youth livestock auction that evening.
Horse activities such as the pleasure show still are expected to take place as well, she said.
Featured grandstand events include the farm tractor pull Friday, Aug. 28; the demolition derby Saturday afternoon, Aug. 29; and the supermodified truck and tractor pull that evening, Aug. 29.

Only the horse pull that usually takes place on the fair’s final day Sunday will be absent this year, Markiewicz said.
Daze 2 Nights, a Wausaukee-based band that plays “a variety of music from the ’60s to today,” will perform at the fair from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Aug. 28. The band Stricken from northeast Wisconsin will be on stage from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Aug. 29; its Facebook page states they focus “on the music people can rock out and dance to, from 3 years old or 88; our stage show is full of energy and attitude!”
Magician Rob Thompson and the Miller & Mike Comedy Show, featuring two former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus clowns who also juggle, will take place throughout the day Aug. 29 and 30 in the children’s area.
“We still have entertainment, we still have music — there’s something for everyone,” Markiewicz said.
Wristbands for unlimited carnival rides will be available for $20 for 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 27 and 28, along with from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. No wristbands are to be offered Saturday, Aug. 29.
