Houghton COVID-19 cases climb

New positive in Iron County

Houghton County again led the Upper Peninsula in new COVID-19 positives Friday with 15, bringing its total to 96, according to Michigan health officials.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ data site Friday also listed a second virus-related death for the county. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department did not update its figures for Houghton County on Friday, so the new death could not be confirmed.

Michigan’s COVID-19 data site Friday also listed seven more positives in Delta County; three in Marquette County; two in Menominee, Keweenaw and Mackinac counties; and one each in Gogebic, Luce and Alger counties.

Locally, Iron County has a new case for 34 total, according to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, and Public Health of Delta-Menominee Counties on its web site had one more positive above the state figures for 151 and 230 cases, respectively.

On the Wisconsin side of the region, the Forest County Health Department posted nine new positives on Facebook, after reporting a dozen more cases Thursday, to reach a total of 104.

Wisconsin’s COVID-19 data site Friday indicated 11 new cases in Forest County, seven in Marinette County, four each in Florence and Vilas counties and two in Iron County. Florence County, however, states on Facebook that the state’s numbers have results that should have been assigned to another county and it has only 29 cases.

For the Upper Peninsula, the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County with four confirmed cases; Luce County, six confirmed cases; Baraga County, six confirmed cases and two probable; Schoolcraft County, 14 confirmed cases and one probable; Alger County, 17 confirmed and one probable; Mackinac County, 32 confirmed cases and 10 probable; Iron County, 34 confirmed cases, two probable and one death; Ontonagon County, 35 confirmed and one probable; Chippewa County, 43 confirmed cases and 21 probable; Dickinson County, 66 confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Houghton County, 96 confirmed cases, 14 probable and two deaths; Gogebic County, 135 confirmed cases, 11 probable and a death; Delta County, 150 confirmed cases, 26 probable and three deaths; Marquette County, 224 confirmed cases, 40 probable and 11 deaths; and Menominee

County, 229 confirmed cases and 31 probable. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also earlier separately had prison inmates who were positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using only the state figures Friday, the Upper Peninsula has had 1,093 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date with 20 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 982 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Friday for a total of 105,377 to date. The state added seven new deaths Friday for a total of 6,526.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Friday had Marinette County with 627 confirmed cases, 18 probable cases and six deaths; Iron County,130 confirmed, five probable and one death; Vilas County, 124 confirmed and two probable; Forest County, 94 confirmed, two probable and four deaths; and Florence County, 32 confirmed. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin recorded 1,498 new positives in the state Friday for a total of 79,354, its largest single-day gain to date, according to the state DHS data site. The state had seven new COVID-19 deaths Friday for a total of 1,153.

According to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Dickinson County as of Friday has had 68 confirmed COVID-19 positives and one probable case, with 53 recovered, two deaths and 14 cases still active. Iron County has had 34 confirmed positives and two probable, with 16 recovered, one death and 19 still active.
