Eighth COVID-19 death reported in Iron County

The coronavirus continues to take a harsh toll in Iron County, with local health officials Monday listing an eighth COVID-19-related death and the seventh reported since Sept. 28.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department on Monday added 26 new COVID-19 positives in Iron County and 19 in Dickinson County since Friday. As of Monday, the DIDHD showed 251 confirmed cases and six probables for Iron County, with 35 recovered, eight deaths and 214 cases still active. Dickinson County had 199 confirmed cases and three probables, with 69 recovered, two deaths and 131 cases still active.

No additional information was released on the latest death, which has been the department’s policy in deference to family wishes.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’s COVID-19 data site Monday had 130 new positives in the Upper Peninsula: 46 in Delta County, 34 in Houghton County, 14 in Menominee County, 13 in Marquette County, nine in Iron County, four in Dickinson and Gogebic counties, two in Keweenaw County and one each in Ontonagon, Alger, Luce and Schoolcraft counties. Delta County also had two additional deaths for a total of 10.

In total for the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday had Keweenaw County with 13 confirmed cases; Luce County, 13 confirmed cases and one probable; Alger County, 22 confirmed and five probable; Schoolcraft County, 34 confirmed cases and three probable; Baraga County, 35 confirmed cases, 10 probable and three deaths; Ontonagon County, 45 confirmed and one probable; Mackinac County, 54 confirmed cases and 21 probable; Chippewa County, 54 confirmed cases and 30 probable; Gogebic County, 164 confirmed cases, 15 probable and a death; Dickinson County, 212 confirmed cases, three probable and two deaths; Iron County, 251 confirmed cases, four probable and eight deaths; Marquette County, 365 confirmed cases, 80 probable and 12 deaths; Menominee County, 408 confirmed cases, 63 probable and three deaths; Houghton County, 569 confirmed cases, 103 probable and three deaths; and Delta County, 621 confirmed cases, 80 probable and 10 deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Using only the state figures Monday, the Upper Peninsula has had 2,860 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date with 42 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 1,407 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan since Saturday for a total of 128,923 to date. The state added 15 new deaths since Saturday for a total of 6,816.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday had 17 new positives in Marinette County, 12 in Vilas County, seven in Forest County, three in Florence County and two in Iron County.

On Facebook, Forest County confirmed a seventh death the state had reported, plus 17 more cases to reach 342. Vilas County on Facebook listed 47 new cases since Friday, with 119 active but only one hospitalized.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday had Marinette County with 1,135 confirmed cases, 37 probable cases and nine deaths; Forest County, 341 confirmed, four probable and seven deaths; Vilas County, 286 confirmed, eight probable and a death; Iron County, 149 confirmed, eight probable and one death; and Florence County, 113 confirmed and two deaths. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin recorded 1,696 new positives in the state Monday for a total of 134,359, according to the state DHS data site. The state added four new COVID-19 deaths Monday to reach 1,381.

Testing at Dickinson County Healthcare System as of Monday showed 51 positives from Dickinson County and 136 cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 4,562 people for COVID-19, with 187 positive, 4,254 negative and 121 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.

The MDHHS on Monday indicated DCHS had seven COVID-19 patients hospitalized, with six in intensive care.
