Iron County reports fifth COVID death this week; Forest Park to remain virtual
Local health officials Friday reported a sixth COVID-19 death in Iron County, which has had a grim week with five new fatalities due to the virus.
No further information was released on the latest death, as has been the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department’s practice to respect families’ privacy.
The DIDHD on Friday updated its figures to show 11 additional cases in Iron County for 225 confirmed cases — up 78 from a week ago — and six probables, with 34 recovered, six deaths and 191 cases still active. Dickinson County had six new positives for 180 confirmed cases and three probables, with 67 recovered, two deaths and 114 cases still active.
Acting on DIDHD recommendations, the Forest Park School District in Crystal Falls has decided to continue with virtual learning for another week and now will not have students back in class until Oct. 12, district officials said. The district suspended face-to-face classes Sept. 24 after students and staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
In Wisconsin, the Florence County School District will not have its elementary students return to the classroom until Oct. 12 after three people tested positive for the virus in that school, officials announced. The high school, however, will remain open for now. Curbside pickup of student technological devices, packets and food service will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at the elementary school. Staff also are expected to be at the school Monday.
On Facebook, the Florence County Health Department advised of a potential COVID-19 exposure at the Golden Nugget in Spread Eagle from Sept. 23 to 26. The business is closed through Oct. 10 for deep cleaning and sanitation “per the owner’s decision.”
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’s COVID-19 data site Friday showed 97 new positives in the Upper Peninsula: 30 in Houghton County, 19 in Delta County, 16 in Dickinson County, seven in Iron County, six in Menominee County, four in Marquette and Gogebic counties, three in Schoolcraft County, two in Alger and Mackinac counties and one each in Baraga, Chippewa, Luce , Ontonagon counties.
The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department confirmed a third death in Baraga County.
In total for the Upper Peninsula, the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County with 11 confirmed cases; Luce County, 13 confirmed cases and one probable; Alger County, 21 confirmed and two probable; Baraga County, 31 confirmed cases, nine probable and three deaths; Schoolcraft County, 32 confirmed cases and two probable; Ontonagon County, 43 confirmed and one probable; Mackinac County, 53 confirmed cases and 21 probable; Chippewa County, 53 confirmed cases and 30 probable; Gogebic County, 159 confirmed cases, 15 probable and a death; Dickinson County, 196 confirmed cases, three probable and two deaths; Iron County, 221 confirmed cases, four probable and five deaths; Marquette County, 341 confirmed cases, 73 probable and 12 deaths; Menominee County, 386 confirmed cases, 63 probable and two deaths; Houghton County, 525 confirmed cases, 95 probable and three deaths; and Delta County, 536 confirmed cases, 78 probable and eight deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS reported 780 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Friday for a total of 126,358 to date. The state added seven new deaths Friday for a total of 6,788.
For Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Friday had 50 new cases in Marinette County, 24 in Forest County, 10 in Vilas County, four in Florence County and one in Iron County.
The WDHS Friday had Marinette County with 1,074 confirmed cases, 31 probable cases and eight deaths; Forest County, 321 confirmed, three probable and six deaths; Vilas County, 253 confirmed, seven probable and a death; Iron County, 144 confirmed, seven probable and one death; and Florence County, 103 confirmed and two deaths. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
Wisconsin recorded 2,745 new positives in the state Friday for a total of 127,906, according to the state DHS data site. The state had five new COVID-19 deaths Friday to reach 1,353.
Testing at Dickinson County Healthcare System as of Wednesday showed 39 positives from Dickinson County and 110 cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 4,298 people for COVID-19, with 149 positive, 3,992 negative and 157 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.
