Iron County has three more deaths attributed to coronavirus

The death toll attributed to COVID-19 in Iron County continued its recent climb Monday, with local health officials reporting three more fatal cases.

As has been its practice to protect privacy, the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department provided no further details on the deaths, which now have reached nine new fatalities in Iron County since mid-January. But the state’s COVID-19 data site indicates that from Jan. 1 to Jan. 26, the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls had five new deaths among its residents, with 25 deaths overall and 102 cases.

The Iron County Medical Care Facility’s website listed that the current outbreak began Dec. 28, with 46 residents testing positive since then, along with 12 employees. The nursing home had a significant outbreak of the virus in September and October as well.

The DIDHD on Monday showed only one new confirmed COVID-19 positive in each county since its last update Friday. Dickinson County also had 31 recovered cases, Iron County 12 recoveries along with the three deaths.

The DIDHD on Monday had Dickinson County at 2,100 confirmed positives and 238 probable cases, with 2,135 recovered, 67 deaths and 136 cases still active. For Iron County, the DIDHD had 854 confirmed cases and 64 probables, with 790 recovered, 43 deaths and 85 still active.

Across the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday showed 26 new confirmed virus positives since Saturday: seven in Gogebic County; six in Marquette County; four each in Houghton and Ontonagon counties; two in Chippewa County; and one each in Dickinson, Iron and Mackinac counties. New deaths were recorded in Iron and Houghton counties.

In total for the U.P., the MDHHS data site Monday listed Keweenaw County at 105 confirmed cases and 26 probable, and one death and one probable death; Luce County, 130 confirmed cases and 74 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 226 confirmed cases and 25 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 272 confirmed, 152 probable and one death, two probable; Mackinac County, 278 confirmed cases and 144 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 335 confirmed, 43 probable and 17 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 487 confirmed cases, 93 probable and 31 deaths; Chippewa County, 697 confirmed cases and 1,010 probable, and 20 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 852 confirmed cases and 62 probable, 39 confirmed deaths and eight probable; Gogebic County, 856 confirmed cases and 325 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and 27 probable; Menominee County, 1,592 confirmed cases, 256 probable and 33 deaths, two probable; Houghton County, 1,995 confirmed cases, 483 probable, 32 confirmed deaths and seven probable; Dickinson County, 2,096 confirmed cases and 236 probable, 55 confirmed deaths and 14 probable; Delta County, 2,615 confirmed cases and 457 probable, 63 confirmed deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,407 confirmed cases, 484 probable and 53 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Monday has had 15,943 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 369 deaths.

The MDHHS on Monday listed 2,066 confirmed new COVID-19 positives in Michigan since Saturday for a total of 561,307. The state added eight new deaths since Saturday to reach 14,609.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Monday had seven new confirmed positives in Vilas County; figures for the other counties were unchanged.

The DHS on Monday had Marinette County with 3,904 confirmed cases, 371 probable cases and 60 deaths, two probable deaths; Vilas County, 1,964 confirmed, 110 probable and 32 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 911 confirmed, 69 probable and 22 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 476 confirmed, 112 probable and 19 deaths, 17 probable; and Florence County, 426 confirmed, 32 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Continuing a pattern of declining activity, Wisconsin added only 750 new positives Monday for a total of 543,165 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state listed only one new death Monday to reach 5,897.
