Winter storm warning for region

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of the Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin, starting Thursday morning and lasting into Friday.

In the U.P., the warning is in effect from 9 a.m. Central time Thursday to 6 a.m. Central Friday for Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Baraga, Gogebic, Ontonagon and southern Houghton counties. It extends from 1 p.m. Eastern time Thursday to 7 a.m. Eastern time for Menominee, Delta, Alger, Luce and Schoolcraft counties.

Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations of 5 to 9 inches, the NWS advised. Lesser amounts are predicted near the immediate Lake Superior shoreline. The storm also could bring a mix of sleet and freezing rain.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the winter storm warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday in Florence, Forest and Vilas counties and 9 a.m. Thursday to noon Friday for Marinette County.

The Florence County School District in Florence, Wis., and School District of Niagara, Wis., already have canceled classes for Thursday. Basketball games for both high schools have been called off as well.
