Dickinson-Iron vaccination rates steadily climbing

UP shows 61 new positive virus cases

More than half of residents older than 65 in Dickinson and Iron counties have now received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, local health officials reported.

The highest percentage to complete the vaccine series locally was 57.6%, or 1,821, in Dickinson County for ages 65 to 74, according to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department.

In Iron County, the best completion rate also came among ages 65 to 74 at 53.7%, or 1,040.

The DIDHD posted Tuesday that vaccinations in Dickinson County as of Saturday had begun on 60% of those ages 75 and older, with 52.4% completing both shots; on 66.8% of those age 65 to 74, with 57.6% completed; on 34% of those age ages 50 to 64, with 14.7% completed; on 23.6% of those age 40 to 49, with 15.1% completed; on 17.7% of those age 30 to 39, with 11.6% completed; on 10.5% of those age 20 to 29, with 6.7% completed; and on 3% of those age 16 to 19, with 1.6% completed.

Among Dickinson County’s entire population age 16 and older, 34.1%, or 7,095, have started the vaccinations and 23.8%, or 4,958, have completed the series.

In Iron County as of Saturday the vaccination series had begun on 59.3% of those age 75 and older, with 50.3% completing both shots; on 63% of those age 65 to 74, with 53.7% completed; on 36.8% of those age 50 to 64, with 14.7% completed; on 18.4% of those age 40 to 49, with 10.9% completed; on 21.2% of those age 30 to 39, with 11.7% completed; on 10.7% of those age 20 to 29, with 5% completed; and on 1.7% of those age 16 to 19, with 0% completed.

Among Iron County’s entire population age 16 and older, 38.2%, or 3,607, had started the vaccinations and 27.3%, or 2,469, have completed the series.

State COVID-19 data Wednesday showed five new confirmed positives in Dickinson County and two in Iron County.

Only three of the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties had no change in numbers Wednesday — one of them being Menominee County — as Michigan posted its highest daily rise since early December at more than 6,300 new cases.

For the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Wednesday listed a total of 61 new confirmed positives: 14 in Marquette County, 13 in Delta County, six in Chippewa and Houghton counties, five in Dickinson and Gogebic counties, three in Schoolcraft and Mackinac counties, two in Iron and Baraga

counties and one each in Alger and Luce counties.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 17,242 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 398 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 124 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 139 confirmed cases and 119 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 250 confirmed cases and 40 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 287 confirmed, 164 probable and one death, four probable; Mackinac County, 319 confirmed cases and 169 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 375 confirmed, 56 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 520 confirmed cases, 107 probable and 33 deaths; Chippewa County, 855 confirmed cases and 1,177 probable, and 25 deaths, five probable; Iron County, 880 confirmed cases and 61 probable, 42 deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 971 confirmed cases and 360 probable, 21 deaths and 28 probable; Menominee County, 1,650 confirmed cases, 280 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,190 confirmed cases and 257 probable, 55 deaths and 16 probable; Houghton County, 2,274 confirmed cases, 554 probable, 32 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 2,790 confirmed cases and 516 probable, 67 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,618 confirmed cases, 619 probable and 55 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday posted 6,311 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total of 672,259. The state added 10 new deaths Wednesday to reach 16,092.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Wednesday had only one new confirmed positive, in Marinette County, and reduced Forest County’s count by one.

The DHS on Wednesday had Marinette County with 4,001 confirmed cases, 411 probable cases and 65 deaths, three probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,193 confirmed, 142 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 936 confirmed, 71 probable and 23 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 567 confirmed, 118 probable and 21 deaths, 19 probable; and Florence County, 430 confirmed, 50 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin added 563 new positives Wednesday for a total of 577,195 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state listed 10 new deaths Wednesday for a total of 6,622.
