Tomassoni appointed to IM council seat
Iron Mountain City Hall.
IRON MOUNTAIN — Cathy Tomassoni is the newest member of Iron Mountain City Council after being appointed Monday to fill a vacancy in Ward 3.
Tomassoni, whose family operates Recreation Lanes, will take the seat formerly held by Butch Schinderle, who resigned earlier this month due to his son’s illness. The appointment is through the Nov. 2 election, though Tomassoni had earlier filed paperwork for the election and will be the only Ward 3 candidate on the ballot, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.
There were no other applicants.
Other seats up for election in November are in Ward 1, where Dale Alessandrini, the current mayor, faces no opposition; and Ward 2, where Bill Revord, mayor pro tem, is stepping down. David Farragh is the only candidate for the Ward 3 seat.
The council’s four at-large seats are not part of this year’s election cycle. Those council members are Nathan Zemar, Ken Clawson, Kyle Blomquist and Pam Maule.
In other action Monday, the council:
— Adopted the 2021-22 fiscal year budget. Water and sewer consumption charges will increase by 5%, effective July 1, but property tax millage rates remain the same. Revord, who chaired the meeting in Alessandrini’s absence, praised staff efforts to present a balanced budget without a tax increase. A public hearing drew no comments.
— Announced the city’s household rubbish drop-off will take place Thursday through Saturday in front of the Department of Public Works building at 125 N. Stephenson Ave. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Hazardous waste and regular garbage are prohibited. Guidelines are posted at www.cityofironmountain.com.
— Scheduled a public hearing for 6 p.m. June 7 on a request from Bill Neuens Enterprises LLC to vacate a portion of right-of-way for Sixth Street between Chapin Street and Stephenson Avenue. “They are looking at developing the site into the Ice Cream Barn and this section would help with the site plan,” Stanchina said. The city has no issues with the request and neighboring property owners will receive a notice of the hearing, he added.
— Approved parking lot and street closures for the Out to Lunch concert series, which will take place at the downtown stage from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. each Thursday from June 10 through Aug. 12. Closures were also approved for Italian Fest on Aug. 14 and Oktoberfest on Sept. 24. Both events were canceled in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions, while Out to Lunch had a shortened season. At the request of the Downtown Development Authority, city noise ordinance provisions will be waived for Italian Fest and Oktoberfest until midnight.
— Learned that Amber Pipp is resigning as DDA program director to accept a new position. The paid part-time vacancy will be advertised, Stanchina said.
— Approved closing a portion of the city parking lot behind Downtown Plaza for the weekly Farmers Market, scheduled to run 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Saturday from June 5 through Oct. 16.
