MSP: Suspect in attempted homicide dies in UP of self-inflicted wound

MANISTIQUE — One man is dead after a police pursuit in Schoolcraft County on Wednesday afternoon.

A “be on the lookout” advisory was issued by the St. Louis, Missouri, Metropolitan Police Department around 3:45 p.m. in regards to a subject who they said was involved in the attempted homicide of his ex-wife earlier in the day, according to the Michigan State Police.

Information passed along from the St. Louis PD indicated they believed the wanted subject was attempting to flee into Canada via the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie.

A vehicle matching the suspect’s description was observed by an off-duty Manistique Public Safety sergeant along U.S. 2 near Duck Inn Road in Manistique Township. Multiple agencies responded to the area and a traffic stop was attempted, however, the suspect vehicle would not stop, police said.

Police said during the ensuing pursuit, the suspect shot himself and then crashed in Gulliver area. The suspect — identified by police as Karl Lymas, a 53-year-old male from the O’Fallon, Illinois, area — died at the scene as a result of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Michigan State Police said in a news release.

Detectives from the MSP Gladstone Post responded to the scene and coordinated an investigation with detectives from St. Louis PD.

Assisting the Michigan State Police at the scene were the Sault Tribe Police Department, Manistique Public Safety, the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
