IM raises its utility deposit fee for renters
IRON MOUNTAIN — A deposit fee charged for rental properties when utilities are placed in the name of the tenant will rise to $150, up from the current $100, under an amended Iron Mountain policy adopted by the city council.
The deposit is intended to cover the final water bill, but a majority of those bills now exceed $100, said City Manager Jordan Stanchina. The deposit fee was last changed in 2012.
Also, if the landlord initiates an affidavit establishing the tenant as solely responsible for payment, the deposit fee will be $400.
In other action Monday, the council:
— Heard Stanchina report that hydrants will be flushed next week. Public works crews will start on Lehman Avenue by the well site and work their way north to south over a period of four days, starting Monday.
— Learned that Bacco Construction Co. will begin sewer repairs on Stanton Street next week, to be followed by a paving project of 0.6 miles. Bacco in September was awarded a $465,995 bid to do more than 1.5 miles of paving on city streets and alleys, but only the Stanton Street work will be done this fall. The completion date was left open until June 2022 because contractors in the region are fully booked.
— Heard council member Ken Clawson suggest the city’s portion of Kramer Drive in the Pine Mountain area as a priority for future paving.
— After receiving no bids for the purchase of a new police vehicle — a 2021 Dodge Charger V6 all-wheel drive — accepted the listed price of $28,184 from LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Lansing through the state’s MiDeal program. The city has budgeted $41,300 for the purchase, including equipment, and will be reimbursed $14,300 through a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grant.
— Authorized paying annual dues of $840 to Northern Michigan Public Service Academy, which offers employee training sessions in the Upper Peninsula, negating the need to travel downstate.
