Grant offers IM boulevard trees at discount

IRON MOUNTAIN – Iron Mountain has been awarded a grant to offer residents trees at a deeply discounted price that city workers then will plant on boulevards and other public spaces.

This grant from DTE Energy has been used to provide six varieties: Adirondack and Firebird crabapple, both smaller; and medium trees such as Japanese tree lilac, bur oak, Magyar ginkgo and blight-resistant elm.

For $200, the city will plant a tree 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and provide a water bag and mulch. Refunds will be given if the boulevard is judged inadequate for the tree.

There are a very limited number — four of each — available for purchase at this reduced price. If a property owner wants a species not listed, the city is willing to check cost and availability.

All orders forms must be submitted with payment at City Hall with payment by Dec. 16.

The tree board will also have its regular annual tree sale with six varieties available: autumn brilliance serviceberry, American hophornbeam, blight-resistant elm, Firebird crabapple, thornless hawthorn and Kentucky expresso coffee tree. Deadline to order also is Dec. 16.
