Free meals for the holidays
Area churches make plans to serve in coming week
MEMBERS OF THE First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford assemble meals — tater tot casserole with green beans, a roll and cranberry fluff — for takeout Monday in the church kitchen. Clockwise from lower left are Linda Smith, JoAnn Novara, Crystal Hogan, Susan Strang, Patti Ebertsch and Lesley Salin. The church provides a free meal every Monday that can be picked up in a drive-through in the parking lot; they typically dish up about 170 to 180 meals. The church also will prepare a free Christmas day ham dinner Dec. 25 for delivery or pickup. (Betsy Bloom/Daily News photo)
IRON MOUNTAIN — Three area churches plan to provide free meals going into Christmas.
The schedule includes:
— A free community holiday meal will be served from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, at Grace United Methodist Church in Norway.
The menu will be ham, cheesy potatoes, corn casserole and dessert.
The free meals will be available for takeout at the church parking lot. Meals will also be delivered in the Norway area.
Reservations for meals are required and can be made by calling Chris Spence at 906-282-9752 by 5 p.m. Friday.
The church is at 130 Odill Drive in Norway, behind the Jake Menghini Museum, and is known as Crossroads, a facility shared by Grace United Methodist and Bethany Lutheran churches.
— The First Presbyterian Church once again will offer a hot meal for Christmas Day on Saturday, Dec. 25, but with no dine-in option as a safety precaution.
The free ham dinner is available by delivery or drive-through pickup only at the church, 395 Hamilton Ave. in Kingsford.
Deliveries will begin at 11 a.m. and pickups are available from 11 a.m to noon Dec. 25. Those coming to the church should use the Hamilton Avenue entrance to the parking lot, where attendants will guide them into the right line.
Reservations are required by Dec. 23 and can be made by calling the church office at 906-774-4211.
Volunteers are also needed to help deliver the meals. Those interested should call the church office as well.
“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we invite our community to enjoy a free dinner,” said Mary Jean Larson, church secretary.
— A free Christmas dinner will be available Saturday, Dec. 25, at the First Baptist Church in Iron River.
The menu will include turkey with all the trimmings: mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, dinner roll and pumpkin pie.
Church organizers are asking that those interested make reservations by calling 906-265-4334.
The community is invited to dine in, pick up their meals at the church or have meals delivered if within a 5-miles radius of the church, 800 Selden Road in Iron River. They will need a name, address and telephone number for delivery.
Meal delivery will begin at 10:30 a.m. Pickups and dining in at the church will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Donations will be accepted for the meal.
