IM approves Gus Macker for July 16-17
IRON MOUNTAIN — Gus Macker basketball will return to the streets of Iron Mountain in the summer of 2022.
The city council has approved the weekend of July 16-17 for the tournament, which covered five blocks of Carpenter Avenue in the summer of 2021.
“It’s a very nice thing for the community,” City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.
More than 75 local businesses and organizations helped sponsor this year’s tournament, primarily organized to support renovations and exhibits at the Imagination Factory Children’s Museum.
Mayor Dale Alessandrini noted the event should again coincide with the Saturday in the Park fundraiser at City Park, an arrangement that seemed to work well this past July.
In other action Monday, the council:
— Gave provisional approval of an adult-use marijuana growing and processing license to Smoke UP Farms LLC for a planned facility at 619 Circle Drive in the city’s industrial park. The council had opened a 45-day window to solicit interest for an unclaimed license and there were no other applicants. The proposed site, building and equipment investment is about $1.7 million. Owners are Sheila Julian and Alexandra Martin, 45% each, and Jo Ann Poulin, 10%.
— Learned the city is slated to receive $210,000 in 2024 to repave North Milwaukee Avenue from Lehman Avenue to the city limit. The local match for the Small Urban Program grant funding is estimated at $72,000. Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, Dickinson County Road Commission and Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency are part of the Small Urban area and share in grant funding, Stanchina explained.
— Approved a street closure Friday for a tree lighting at First National Bank & Trust during the Downtown Christmas Walk. A portion of East Ludington Street near the bank will be blocked from 3 to 7 p.m.
— Rescheduled a public hearing on a zoning change for a neighborhood business district to 6 p.m. Jan. 3. The hearing had been scheduled for Monday, but a deadline for the public notice was missed. The change proposed by the Iron Mountain Planning Commission is for an area within the border of River Avenue, West H Street, Cedar Avenue and West D Street. The planned switch from B-2 to B-1 zoning is meant to accommodate existing and planned businesses while also easing deed and insurance complications for homeowners.
— Reported 29 deer culled so far through the city’s managed archery hunt.
