Snowmobilers killed in UP crashes

MARQUETTE — Two men died in separate snowmobile crashes Friday, both in Alger County, authorities report.

A 33-year-old Ohio man was killed about 8:25 p.m. Friday on Trail No. 8 near Forest Lake Road in Au Train Township, according to the Alger County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was eastbound when he “failed to negotiate a curve” on the trail, Alger County Sheriff’s Office officials stated in a news release. “The victim lost control of the snowmobile and was ultimately ejected into a tree. It was concluded that excessive speed was the only contributing factor for the accident.”

Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21 and the Alger County Sheriff’s Office responded.

The other snowmobile crash came In Munising Township, where a 23-year-old male from downstate Taylor was fatally injured about 12:30 p.m. Friday on Trail 8 near Riley Road, the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post reported.

Investigators reported the man was traveling with a group of snowmobilers when he went off the trail on a curve and struck a tree. The driver later died of his injuries at Munising Memorial Hospital.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, police stated.

Assisting MSP were the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue and Wilderness Towing.

No names were released for either fatality.
