IRON MOUNTAIN — Working smoke alarms alerted a woman and two children who were sleeping on the second floor and were able to escape a fire that heavily damaged a home Thursday afternoon at 801 E. C St., authorities said.

A family dog firefighters located and removed from the structure did not survive, despite resuscitation efforts with a pet rescue kit and later at Iron Mountain Animal Hospital, said Jeff Friedenstab, Iron Mountain deputy director of fire services.

The fire was reported at 2:27 p.m. with the first unit arriving within three minutes of the call to find heavy fire throughout the first floor of the 2 1/2-story home. A neighboring home was also threatened.

In all, nine Iron Mountain firefighters responded, manning two engines and a ladder truck. No injuries were reported and the fire was under control by 2:46 p.m., Friedenstab said. The water supply was a fire hydrant 150 feet down the block, he noted.

Firefighters stayed at the house until 4:27 p.m., putting out hot spots and overhauling the structure. Assisting were the Iron Mountain police and public works departments, Integrity Care EMS, We Energies and DTE Energy.

The house is uninhabitable due to the damage and the fire remains under investigation.

The dog was taken to the veterinary clinic by a police squad car. “Special thanks to Dr. (Brian) Scott and his team at Iron Mountain Animal Hospital for their efforts to resuscitate the family pet,” Friedenstab said.

The family of four has received American Red Cross of Wisconsin aid for emergency lodging and meals, as well as hygiene kits, blankets and toys, said Justin Kern, communications director. Red Cross volunteers and local support agencies will work with the family in the days ahead on the next steps in their recovery, Kern added.

Since the start of 2022, the American Red Cross has supported 913 people displaced by more than 180 residential fires in Wisconsin and the western Upper Peninsula.

Starting at $3.50/week.
