State: Little change in region’s COVID-19 activity

State data Friday showed no new confirmed COVID-19 positives in Iron County since Wednesday — although it did have another death blamed on the virus — and a lowered case count for Dickinson County.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Friday had 26 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Wednesday: 13 in Houghton County; three in Menominee, Marquette and Ontonagon counties; two in Keweenaw County; and one each in Alger, Chippewa, Mackinac and Gogebic counties; the counts in Dickinson and Luce counties were reduced by one. The state listed two virus-related deaths in Chippewa County, one each in Iron, Marquette and Luce counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 51,224 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 824 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County at 456 confirmed cases and 54 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 661 confirmed cases and 761 probable, 10 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 877 confirmed, 104 probable and 35 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,056 confirmed, 657 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,083 confirmed cases and 665 probable, 14 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,548 confirmed cases and 836 probable, 28 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,715 confirmed cases, 318 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,306 confirmed cases and 337 probable, 71 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,725 confirmed cases and 521 probable, 39 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,401 confirmed cases and 5,061 probable, and 86 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 3,929 confirmed cases, 1,685 probable and 60 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,983 confirmed cases and 2,377 probable, 86 deaths and 22 probable; Houghton County, 6,692 confirmed cases, 1,090 probable, 78 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,881 confirmed cases and 2,034 probable, 130 deaths and 25 probable; and Marquette County, 11,911 confirmed cases, 3,021 probable and 116 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday had 1,578 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 788 per day for the two days, for a total of 2,076,143 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that period added 38 deaths attributed to the virus — including 39 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review, plus a correction on a previously recorded death — to reach 32,752.

The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday had Marinette County at 11,568 COVID-19 positives, up five since Thursday, and 120 deaths, up two; Vilas County, 5,201 positives, up one, and 88 deaths; Forest County, unchanged at 2,667 positives and 51 deaths; Iron County, 1,464 positives, up one, and 47 deaths; and Florence County, unchanged at 1,078 positives and 16 deaths.
